Scientists Discover New Deep-Sea Species Off Atlantic Coast
A research expedition has catalogued three previously unknown organisms living at depths exceeding 4,000 meters.
Marine biologists from an international research consortium have announced the discovery of three new species during a deep-sea expedition along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, adding to the growing list of organisms found in Earth's least-explored environment.
The creatures, including a bioluminescent crustacean and two species of polychaete worm, were collected using remotely operated vehicles at depths between 4,000 and 4,800 meters.
Researchers say the findings underscore the importance of protecting deep-sea ecosystems from the growing threat of commercial mining operations targeting mineral-rich seabed deposits.
