A non-profit ocean cleanup organisation has announced it has now removed 10,000 tonnes of plastic from ocean waters over the course of its decade-long operation, a milestone that coincides with the deployment of its latest generation of collection systems.

The new systems are projected to double the organisation's monthly extraction rate and represent the most cost-effective configuration in the project's history, bringing the cost per tonne of ocean plastic collected to below $5,000 for the first time.

Scientists affiliated with the project say the removed material is significant but note that meaningful reduction in ocean plastic concentrations will require equally sustained action on land-based waste management to reduce inputs.
