Government Unveils Digital Identity Card Programme
Citizens will be able to store legal identification on their smartphones, replacing the need to carry physical documents for most purposes.
The government has announced a national digital identity programme that will allow citizens to store a legally recognised version of their national ID card on a smartphone application, accepted by banks, healthcare providers, airports, and government services.
The programme, set to roll out in phases beginning next year, uses cryptographic verification to prevent forgery and includes privacy-by-design features that allow users to share only the specific attributes required — such as age — without exposing full document data.
Civil liberties groups have welcomed the privacy approach but called for stronger independent oversight of the underlying infrastructure.
