Wildfire Season Begins Early Across Western Region
Unseasonably dry conditions and high winds have triggered multiple large fires weeks ahead of the typical start of the season.
Fire authorities have declared elevated emergency status after multiple large wildfires broke out across the western region this week, driven by the driest spring on record and persistent high winds that have grounded aerial firefighting assets on several days.
More than 15,000 hectares have burned to date, with three communities evacuated and significant damage reported to agricultural land and forestry. No fatalities have been confirmed, though several firefighters sustained minor injuries.
Meteorologists warn that the conditions responsible are likely to persist for at least two more weeks, with no significant rainfall forecast in the medium-term outlook.
