New Antibiotic Effective Against Drug-Resistant Bacteria
Laboratory and early clinical results for a synthetic compound show it can clear infections caused by pathogens resistant to all current front-line antibiotics.
Researchers have published early clinical results for a synthetic antibiotic compound that has demonstrated efficacy against multiple strains of bacteria classified as resistant to all available front-line treatments, including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, which cause tens of thousands of deaths annually in hospitals worldwide.
Phase II trial data show an 89% clinical cure rate in patients with confirmed resistant infections, with a safety profile comparable to existing antibiotics in the same class.
The drug's developers have applied for expedited regulatory review, and WHO has signalled it may be eligible for priority medicines designation given the acute unmet medical need in the antimicrobial resistance space.
