Startup Develops Biodegradable Packaging from Seaweed
A materials science company has created a flexible film that degrades in seawater within weeks, offering an alternative to single-use plastics.
A materials science startup has unveiled a commercially scalable biodegradable film derived from sustainably farmed seaweed, capable of replacing single-use plastic wrapping for fresh food products and degrading completely in seawater within four to six weeks.
The company has completed trials with three supermarket chains and is in discussions with several major FMCG brands about scaling production. The material matches conventional plastic film in barrier properties and manufacturing compatibility, addressing a key obstacle to adoption.
Investors injected €18 million in a funding round to build a dedicated production facility, expected to be operational within 18 months.
