A large prospective cohort study tracking over 30,000 adults for more than a decade has found a significant association between high consumption of ultra-processed foods and accelerated cognitive decline, including faster deterioration in memory and executive function.

Participants in the highest quintile of ultra-processed food consumption showed cognitive ageing equivalent to approximately 2.5 additional years compared with those in the lowest quintile, after adjusting for socioeconomic, lifestyle, and health factors.

Researchers cautioned that the study demonstrates association rather than causation, but called for urgent further investigation given the widespread prevalence of ultra-processed foods in modern diets.
