A major pharmacy retailer has begun rolling out an AI-assisted prescription review system across its network, designed to flag potential drug interactions, dosage anomalies, and contraindications in real time before medications are dispensed.
In a pilot across 200 locations, the tool identified clinically significant alerts in 3.2% of prescriptions reviewed, of which pharmacists confirmed that approximately half warranted direct intervention or prescriber contact.
Health regulators have welcomed the initiative but emphasised that the system must function as a decision-support tool rather than a substitute for professional pharmacist judgement, a principle the company said is embedded in its design.
